7 Big Bang theory and religion

While it is often proposed that the Big Bang theory destroys the concept of god, giving boost to atheism, the view is insubstantial, arising from a limited Western scope of knowledge of the various religions of the world, primarily concerned with the Christian theory of creation. As diverse as the religions of the world are, they have have equally diverse views on the origin of life and the cosmos as we know it. While the theory of Big Bang is certainly a slap in the face of Christian creationism, there are systems of belief that remain virtually untouched by a conflict of science and religion stemming from the theory.

As an example, some theistic branches of Hinduism, such as the Vaishnava-traditions, in fact conceive of a theory of creation with peculiar parallels to the theory of Big Bang. The Hindu-mythos describes a primordial state of existence known as "pradhana", or the undifferentiated, homogeneous sum-total of elements, which bursts forth with effulgence as the Great Vishnu glances over it, transforming into the active state of the sum-total of matter ("prakriti"), which further becomes differentiated as the various core elements of existence, such as space, gas, energy, liquid and solid matter, which in turn further evolve and interact, assuming the shape of the cosmos as we know it. The theory, narrated for example in the third book of the Bhagavata Purana (primarily, chapters 10 and 26), has borrowed a number of elements from the Sankhya-theory, one of the classical Indic systems of philosophy. See here for an article elaborating on the Hindu-mythos of creation.

The big bang theory is largely based on Friedmann's solutions to General Relativity. It is unrelated with any religion as such.

8 Origin of the term

The term "Big Bang" was coined in 1949 by Fred Hoyle during a BBC radio program, The Nature of Things; the text was published in 1950. Hoyle did not subscribe to the theory and intended to mock the concept. It may have been in part a joking reference to the fact that George Gamow, the leading proponent of the theory at the time, also worked on the development of the atomic bomb.
