Akashi (明石市; -shi) is a city located in southern Hyogo, Japan, on the Inland Sea west of Kobe. It was an important city during Japan's pre-modern period due to the presence of Akashi Castle .

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 291,869 and the density of 5,929.89 persons per kmē. The total area is 49.22 kmē.

Japan Standard Time is set based on the location of the city. It is also the northern terminus of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge that connects Honshu to Awaji and Shikoku.
