Alan Baker (born on August 19 1939) is a British mathematician. He was born in London. He is known for his work on effective methods in number theory, in particular those arising from transcendence theory. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970, at age 31. His academic career started as a student of Harold Davenport, in London and Cambridge. He is a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.His interests are:

His students include John CoatesProfessor John Henry Coates F. born January 26, 1945) is a mathematician who holds (since 1986) the position of Sadleirian Professor (of pure mathematics) at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Coates was born in New South Wales, Australia,, David Masser , and Roger Heath-Brown .
