Alanson is located in Littlefield Township on U.S. Highway 31 at the junction with Michigan State Highway 68 . Petoskey is about 12 miles southwest on US 31 and Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 25 miles north. Interstate 75 is about 11 miles to the east on M-68 at Indian River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.96% water.
