Allvar Gullstrand (born June 5 1862 in Landskrona - died July 28 1930 in Stockholm) was a Swedish ophthalmologist.

He was professor ( 18941927) successively of eye therapy and of optics at the University of Uppsala. He applied the methods of physical mathematics to the study of optical images and of the refraction of light in the eye. For this work he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1911.

Gullstrand is noted also for his research on astigmatismAstigmatism is a refraction error of the eye characterized by an aspherical cornea in which one axis of corneal steepness is greater than the perpendicular axis. Astigmatism causes difficulties in seeing fine detail, and can be often corrected by glasses and for improving the ophthalmoscopeIn medicine the ophthalmoscope was invented by Hermann von Helmholtz and is an instrument that is used to look into the human eye. Its use is crucial in determining the health of the retina and the corpus vitreum. In patients with headaches, the finding o and corrective lenses for use after removal of a cataractNormal vision.
