Animal environments are classified as either aquatic (water), terrestrial (land), or amphibious (water and land). Aquatic animals require a watery habitat, but do not necessarily have to live entirely in water. This term can be applied to aquatic or sea mammals such as those in the order Cetacea ( whales), which cannot survive on land, as well as four-footed mammals like the river otter ( Lutra canadensis) and beavers (family Castoridae). It also includes aquatic birds that either swim, wade or dive on the water itself and live outside the water. These include the seabirds, such as gulls (family Laridae), pelicans (family Pelecanidae), and albatrosses (family Diomedeidae), and the anseriforms, such as ducks, swans, and geese (family Anatidae). Amphibious and amphibiotic animals, like frogA frog is a fresh-water amphibian which changes from a tadpole and is of the family Ranidae in the Order Anura. They are closely related to toads. The Ranidae are sometimes called the "true frogs" since a few members of other families also have common nams (the order AnuraArchaeobatrachia Mesobatrachia Neobatrachia The Anura is the order of animals in the class Amphibia that includes frogs and toads. Although distinctions can be made between frogs and toads, those distinctions have no scientific status. The living Anura ar), while they do require water, are separated into their own environmental classification. The majority of amphibians (class Amphibia) have an aquatic larvalLarvae are the plural of larva, juvenile form of animals with indirect development. See larva In Roman mythology, the Larvae were the spectres or spirits of the dead; they were the malignant version of the Lares. Some Roman writers describe Lemures as the stage, like a tadpoleA tadpole (also known as a pollywog is a larval frog, toad, salamander, or newt. In this stage it breathes by means of external or internal gills, is at first lacking legs, and has a finlike tail. As a tadpole matures, it metamorphoses by gradually growin, but then live as terrestrial adults, and may return to the water to mateDisambiguate: Mate or yerba mate is a South American herb, as well as the popular caffeinated beverage prepared therefrom. Aquatic animals are often of special concern to conservationists because of the delicacy of their environments.
