The bhagavata purana is also known as the Srimad Bhagavatam. It is considered as the very essence of the vedas according to sacred Hindu scriptures. Teachers descending from disciplic successions leading to Krishna also confirm it.

The bhagavata purana is a narration of a conversation between two holy personalities from the Hindu tradition. The conversation takes place between a famous King of India by the name of King Pariksit and a saint by the name of Sukadeva Goswami. The king who has been cursed to die in seven days by a Brahmin, decides to give up all duties as a king and learn about the goal of life. As he prepares for his impending death in seven days, the saint Sukadeva goswami who has been searching for a suitable disciple to teach the great knowledge to approaches the king and agrees to impart this knowledge. The conversation takes place uninterrupted non-stop for seven days during which the king does not eat, drink or sleep. During this time the saint explains that one's goal in life is understanding the supreme absolute and defines the supreme personality of godhead. It is claimed in Hindu scripture that the thorough reading of this book from beginning to end, will definitely enable the reader to achieve complete god realisation.

A popular translation of the bhagavat purana compiled by Srila Prabhupada, a teacher from a disciplic succession descending from Krishna himself has been made available by his disciples online at http://srimadbhagavatam.com.
