Black Panther is the title given to the ruler of the Wakandans, a fictional society set in the Marvel Comics Universe. The Black Panther is entitled to the use of a heart-shaped herb that grants the user enhanced strength,agility and perceptions. The costume worn is a symbol of office and is used even during diplomatic missions.
The most famous Black Panther was T'Challa, son of T'Chaka, who achieved the title by defeating the various champions of the tribes of Wakanada to eventually achieve the use of the costume and the herb. Most recently the role of Black Panther has fallen into the hands of the Eric Killmonger who has defeated T'Challa in ritual combat.
He has been a member of the Avengers and the Defenders.
At the time when the Black Pather was introduced as a character, there were few black comic book characters.
