British Comedy, known in many countries as Britcom, is a very particular type of humour that is performed in Britain and exported around the world. British comedy is known for its consistently quirky characters, settings and plots and has produced some of the most famous and memorable comic actors and characters in the last fifty years.

A number of british radio comedies achieved considerable renown in the second half of the twentieth century. One notable and influential series was The Goon Show, which was broadcast through the 1950s. Another was Round the Horne.

Currently, most British comedy is broadcast via TV with sketch shows, stand-up comedy, impressionists and sitcoms being the four most popular formats.

One notable show is Monty Python's Flying Circus, a comedy from the seventies that introduced us to such luminaries as John Cleese, Eric Idle, and Terry GilliamTerence Vance Gilliam (born November 22 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) is a film director. Terry Gilliam started off as an American animator and strip cartoonist; one of his early photographic strips featured John Cleese. Moving to England, he anima and went on to shape the future of comedy in the UK. Other sketch shows include French and Saunders, Little BritainLittle Britain is also an old term for Brittany in France and the county in the American state of New York Little Britain is a BBC radio and television sketch show written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams. The original series debuted on BBC Radio 4 in 200 and The Fast ShowThe Fast Show is a BBC comedy sketch program which ran from 1994 to 2000. It also produced two national tours, the first in 1998 with the cast of the BBC spoof quiz show Shooting Stars, and the second being their 'Farewell Tour' in 2002. It was very loose.

Seven series were broadcast between 1981 and 1991, with special Christmas episodes occasionally until 2003. The show was sel, Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley, Fawlty Towers, and Dad's Army.
