: For other uses of Brittle, see Brittle (disambiguation).

A material is brittle if it is subject to fracture when put under stress or strain.

When used in materials science, it is generally applied to inelastic metals that are subject to failure when lateral or torsion stress is applied. There is no plastic deformation before failure.
