Bromophenol blue, Tetrabromophenolsulfonphthalein, , is an acid-base indicator whose useful range as an indicator lies between pH 3.0 and 4.6. It changes from yellow Species I at pH 3.0 to purple Species II at pH 4.6, and this reaction is reversible. This a low molecular weight dye used a color marker allow the progress of the agarose gel electrophoresis to be seen. Because of DNA is negatively charged have slitly acidic nature.
In gel electrophoresis xylene cyanol also use color marker. These markers are mildly carcinogenic.
