In astronomy and astrology, Cancer, the crab, is one of the twelve constellationOrion is a remarkable constellation, visible from most places on the globe (but not always the whole year long). A constellation is a group of stars visibly related to each other in a particular configuration. In three-dimensional space, most of the starss of the zodiacThis article is about the astrological concept. For other uses, see zodiac (disambiguation The zodiac (from Greek zoon "animal") is an imaginary belt in the heavens extending approximately 8 degrees on either side of the Sun's apparent path (the ecliptic). Cancer is small and dim, and to many it does not resemble a crab. It lies between Gemini to the west and Leo to the east, Lynx to the north and Canis Minor and Hydra to the south.

1 Notable deep sky objects

Cancer is best noted among stargazers as the home of Praesepe ( M44), an open cluster also called the Beehive Cluster or the Gate of Men, which contains the star η Cancri.

Another deep sky object M67, near Acubens (α Cnc), is one of the oldest clusters in the sky, more than 10 * 10^9 years old. It is a large, faint open cluster of about 100 stars.

2 Mythology

In Greek mythology, Cancer was a brave little crab who tried to stop Hercules from defeating the Lernaean Hydra and was squashed for his efforts. In some myths, he was sent with Scorpio to attack the hunter Orion.

3 Astrology

The astrological sign Cancer ( June 21 - July 22) is associated with the constellation. In some cosmologies, Cancer is associated with the classical element Water, and thus called a Water Sign (with Scorpio and Pisces). It is also one of the four cardinal signs (along with Aries, Libra, and Capricorn). Its polar opposite is Capricorn. Each astrological sign is assigned a part of the body, viewed as the seat of its power. Cancer rules the breasts and belly. The symbol for Cancer is the crab. Cancerian qualities include tenacity, powerful and tempestuous emotions, strong moods, a fierce protectiveness of family and country, a strong ability to nurture others, and a resistance to external change, but negative traits include a tendency to get too emotionally attached, mood swings, and mild paranoia. Famous "Cancerians" or "Moon Children" are George W. Bush, Franka Potente, Liv Tyler, Pamela Anderson and Tom Cruise.

In the 1970s there was a proposal to rename the zodiac sign, as some astrologers felt that an imagined association with the disease Cancer was off-putting. Some people with the sun sign of Cancer refer to themselves as moon children instead (the sign is associated with the Moon in astrology).
