Freeman is Professor emeritus of Science Policy at the University of Sussex, England. 1966-1982 he was Director of SPRU and RM Phillips Professor of Science Policy. His main areas are technical change in economic theory, the diffusion of generic technologies and their future implications, structural change in the world economy, and the "catch-up" efforts of East Asian and Latin American countries.
Freeman holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Linköping, Sweden; Sussex, Middlesex, Birmingham, and Brighton. He received the 1987 Bernal Prize, the 1988 Schumpeter Prize, the 1993 Prix International du Futuroscope, and the 2001 World Technology Award for Policy. The new building of SPRU in Brighton is called the Freeman Centre.
