DMAE (deanol, demanol) is dimethylaminoethanol, (CH3)2NCH2CH2OH, a related compound to choline. It is reported to have nootropic effects, and unlike choline itself, crosses the blood-brain barrier readily. It is believed that DMAE is methylated to choline in the brain.

DMAE is found naturally in fish. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is found in the brain. Deficiencies of the neurotransmitter will cloud your thought. Among other things, alcohol destroys it; so drinkers will especially find DMAE helpful. Although many cannabis smokers use DMAE, DMAE does not directly address the residual brain fog of binge cannabis consumption.
