DTN, or Data Transmission Network, is the brand name for several proprietary technologies for the delivery of financial market, agricultural, weather, and general news data. Traditionally, DTN has delivered its data by way of dedicated, one-way Ku-Band satellite-based computer terminals, but an Internet-based delivery option is now also offered. DTN also has dedicated network links in several large U.S. metropolitan areas. DTN, founded in 1984, is also the name of the service's parent company. DTN is especially targeted toward those interested in trading in markets such as futures and commodities and is popular among many farmers as well for its real-time weather data.
1 Technology
DTN uses proprietary technologies for its satellite-delivered data services. Satellite data is received using a standard small Ku-Band capable dish antenna with a special LNBF used only with the DTN service. The current generation of satellite receiver is the DTN D8000-series, which can be networked into an existed LAN using Ethernet. Third-party software is used to display and interpret the data on a personal computer.
