Eugène Charles Catalan ( 18141894) was a Belgian mathematician who worked in number theory.

He introduced the Catalan numbers to solve a combinatorial problem. While teaching at l' École Polytechnique de Paris, he stated the famous Catalan's conjecture, which was published in 1844 and was eventually proved in 2002.
