The Eye Toy is a digital camera device for the PlayStation 2 similar to a webcam. It plugs in via a USB port on the console. It is an input device that features a 640x480 resolution display and built in microphone. It is not intended for use as a normal PC camera, although some people have developed unofficial drivers for it. The camera is manufactured by Logitech.

1 History

The Eye Toy was originally thought of by Dr Richard Marks, who had the idea of connecting a web camera to a PlayStation 2 and using it to play games with. The idea of using cameras in games is not new, as used previously in many arcade games and toys such as the Game Boy Camera, But, with the resolution of modern cameras and the processing power of the PlayStation 2 there were new ideas possible. The idea was taken up by S.C.E.E. London Studio, who showed a concept in 2002 with four games. The idea was a success and first real game, Eye Toy : Play was launched in late 2003.

2 Cameo

Eye Toy: Cameo is a system for allowing players to include their own images as avatars in other games. Games that support the feature include a rudimentary head scanning program that can be used to generate a 3D mapping of the player's head. Once stored on a memory card, this file is then available in games that support the Cameo feature.

Eye Toy : AntiGrav is a hoverboardA hoverboard is a fictitious skateboard-like vehicle seen in the films Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III. The main difference with a "modern, real" skateboard is that a hoverboard does not have or require wheels to operate, and fl game by Sony, released in early November 2004. It was touted as the first "real" game for Eye Toy targeted to more mature players. The earlier games such as Play and Groove were geared towards younger kids for family or party fun. Unlike the earlier Eye Toy games, the player's image is NOT shown inside the Antigrav game. Instead, the player's movement is reflected in the animated character in the game. The player moves his body to control the on-screen hoverboard rider to go through an obstacle course. The player needs to make turns, jump over or duck under obstacles by moving his body in front of the Eye Toy camera. The game basically allows one player at a time, but supports up to four players taking turns. One feature in the game is to let a player challenge another player in a follow-the-leader game. The first player's movement in the game is recorded and played back as a shadow character, the secord player needs to follow the shadow in the same trail taken by the first player. Since the game requires full body movement and quick reflexes, it can be used for physical exercise.

When the game was first released in November 2004, it was bundled with the Eye Toy hardware. The game would not be sold separately until later.
