The FAMAS is the standard assault rifle of the French military.

It has a bullpup configuration, weighs in at 3.6 kg, and uses the french 5.56×45mm cartridge (The version G2 can also fire the standard 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge). It is fully ambidextrous. The F2 version is designed to accommodate STANAG magazine as used by the M16.

The name stands for Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne - manufactured by the Saint Etienne arms factory. The factory is a member of the French government-owned GIAT Industries complex.

The FAMAS is affectionately known as Clairon ("trumpet", because of its shape) amongst French troops.
