The term FTP server can mean one of two things:- a computer responsible for serving any kind of files, via the FTP protocol to ftp clients which can also web browsers;
- a software program that implements the FTP protocol and is working as a daemon serving any kind of files.
You can connect to an FTP server using an FTP client and some web browsers.
There are numerous versions of FTP server software. They include:
- AnomicFTPD - RFC959 compliant terminal-based ftpd server in Java with own user account management. Released under GPL.[1]
- BSD ftpd
- Bullet Proof FTP Server - a commercial server.[2]
- glFTPd [3]
- PureFTPd - a GPLed FTP server for Unix-like operating systems. Binaries are available for Windows.[4]
- ProFTPd [5]
- RaidenFTPD [6]
- Serv-U FTP Server [7]
- vsftpd [8]
- War FTP Daemon [9]
