The Franche-Comté (the former "Free County" of Burgundy, as distinct from the neighbouring Duchy) is a region of eastern France. The principal cities are Besançon (the historic capital of the region) BelfortBelfort ( German Befert or Beffert)is a town of northeastern France, prefecture (capital) of the Territoire de Belfort departement in the Franche-Comte region''. Its population is approximately 50,000, or 80,000 including suburbs. It is also the home of T and MontbéliardMontbeliard (German Mompelgard is a commune in the Doubs departement in eastern France. It is one of the two sous-prefectures of the departement''. Population: 28,766. Internal agglomeration: 123,000. External agglomeration: 302,000 (with the city of Belf ( Aire Urbaine Belfort-Montbéliard-Héricourt-Delle ).

The region's population fell by a fifth between the censuses of 1851 and 1946, reflecting low French natural growth and migration to more urbanised parts of the country. Most of the decline occurred in Haute-Saône and Jura, which remain among the country's more agriculture-dependent areas.
