Grolsch is a Dutch pilsener which was originally brewed in Groenlo. The Grolsch brewery in Groenlo is in business since 1615. The town of Groenlo was then known as Grolle, therefore the name Grolsch. The brewery was first operated by Willem Neerfeldt. Later his son in law, Peter Cuyper brought the quality of beer brewing in Groenlo to a new level by using an exclusive recepture and a natural method of brewing beer. The beer from Groenlo (Grolle) became ever more known in the surroundings of Groenlo. Through the years the demand for Grolsch beer shifted from a local to national and eventually international level. Nowadays Grolsch exports to about 50 countries.

After building an extra brewery in Enschede, the Enschede brewery became the main brewery over the years. This brewery was heavily damaged during the fireworks explosion 13 May 2000 . The brewery in Groenlo has been closed and a new brewery replacing both the Groenlo and Enschede affiliate opened in 2004 in Boekelo nearby Enschede.
