In the fictional universe of Forgotten Realms, Guenhwyvar is a magical black panther from the Astral Plane. Guenhwyvar weighs about 600 lb (272 kg).Guenhwyvar is called to the Prime Material Plane by a onyx figurine, most recently in the possession of the drow Drizzt Do'Urden.
1 History
The onyx figurine was originally owned by Josidiah Starym of Myth Drannor , and has also been possessed by the drow elf Masoj, of House Hun'ett, of who Drizzt Do'Urden took the figurine. In his time after leaving Menzoberranzan, Drizzt quickly mentioned the loneliness in the Underdark. Because he also mentioned turning into an animalic warrior in times of extreme lonliness he decided to conjure Guenhwyvar as frequently as possible. In this time they became even closer than before and they share a deep sympathy for each other. Guenhwyvar saved Drizzts life more than once in their common history. Eventhough Drizzts companions (especially Wulfgar) thought first the cat was suspicious, it later became an important part of the group.
2 Characteristics
Guenhwyvar seemed always to be like Drizzt. He accepts him as a master, but in some kind loves him as a friend too. His relationship to Drizzt is unique. The panther can be conjured every second day and regenerates from almost everything while he is on the Astral Plane. Because of his magical power he is a really strong enemy for every kind of fiend and eventhough he canīt really do magic himself, he always keeps a magical touch in Salvatoreīs novels, of course because of his writing too.
