The HNMS Jacob van Heemskerk was a light cruiser in the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was commissioned on May 10th, 1940, when World War II started in the Netherlands. However, as she was not finished she was sent to the UK, where she was refitted as an air defence cruiser.

The ship saw extensive action during World War II, mostly in convoy duties.

The HNMS Jacob van Heemskerk was the last of a series of three light cruisers. The other two were HNMS De Ruyter and HNMS Tromp.
