Hans Christian Ørsted ( August 14, 1777 in RudkøbingMarch 9, 1851 in Copenhagen) was a Danish physicist and chemist, influenced by the thinking of Immanuel Kant. In 1820 he discovered the relationship between electricity and magnetism in a very simple experiment. He demonstrated that a wire carrying a current was able to deflect a magnetized compass needle. Ørsted did not suggest any satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon, nor did he try to represent the phenomenon in a mathematical framework.

Ørsted was not the first person to discover that electricity and magnetism are related. He was preceded in this discovery by 18 years by Gian Domenico RomagnosiGian Domenico Romagnosi ( 1761- 1835) was an Italian philosopher., an Italian legal scholar. An account of Romagnosi's discovery was published in 1802Events March 16 West Point is established. March 25/ 27 Treaty of Amiens between France and United Kingdom ends the War of the Second Coalition. March 28 H. Olbers discovers the asteroid Pallas. May 19 Napoleon Bonaparte establishes the French legion d'ho in an Italian newspaper, but it was overlooked by the scientific community.

February 9 After no presidential candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the United States House of Representatives elects John he made a significant contribution to chemistryChemistry is the science of matter and its interactions with energy (see physics, biology). Because of the diversity of matter (which is mostly atomic), Chemists are often engaged in the pursuit of studying how atoms interact to form molecules, and how mo by producing aluminiumAluminium (or aluminum in North American English) is the chemical element in the periodic table with the symbol Al and atomic number 13. A silvery and ductile member of the poor metal group of elements, aluminium is found primarily as the ore bauxite and for the first time.

The magnetism unit oerstedThe oersted is the CGS unit of magnetic induction. The magnetic field produced at the center of a plane circular induction coil of one turn and a radius of one centimetre, which carries a current of 1/2π amperes. In SI units, 1 oersted 79. 58 A/ m The is named after him.
