Hays County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 97,589. Its county seat is San Marcos 6. Hays County is named for John C. Hays , a Texas Ranger and Mexican-American War officer.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,761 km˛ (680 mi˛). 1,756 km˛ (678 mi˛) of it is land and 5 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.
