Following a short regency by Kingdom of Prussia (1791-1810) the region fell to Bavaria in 1810. The district was established in 1852Events January 14 President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte proclaims a new constitution for the French Second Republic. January 17 United Kingdom recognizes independence of the Transvaal Devil's Island penal colony opens February 11 First British public toilet and has undergone slight changes only.
The Saxon SaaleThe Saale is a river of Germany, a tributary of the Elbe, rises between Bayreuth and Hof in the N. of Bavaria, springing out, of the Fichtelgebirge at an altitude of 2390 ft. Course It pursues a winding course in a northerly direction, and after passing t river originates in the south of the district, on the slopes of the FichtelgebirgeThe Fichtelgebirge is a mountain chain in northeastern Bavaria, Germany. It extends from the valley of the Red Main River to the Czech border, where it is continued by the much higher Ore Mountains. The highest mountain is the Schneeberg (1051 m). Rivers. From here it runs northwards, its valley separating the Fichtelgebirge in the east and the lower Frankenwald hills in the west.
