Iar Connaught, or West Connaught, was once taken to mean the area of what is now County Galway east of Lough Corrib, stretching from Tuam to Athenry to Oranmore. After its leading family, the O'Flaherty s, were expelled west of the Galway or Corrib River by the O'Connor s and de Burgh s in the 1200s, their new kingdom was given the name of their old territory. Since the early 19th century it has been called Connemara, a contraction of Conmaicne Mara, after a people and territory located in the extreme west of the region.
