This article is about the Internet, the extensive, worldwide computer network available to the public. An internet is a more general term for a set of interconnected computer networks that are connected by internetworking.

The Internet is the publicly available worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching over the Internet Protocol (IP). It is made up of thousands of other, smaller business, academic, and government networks that provide various information and services, such as by electronic mail, online chat, and on the graphical, interlinked World Wide Web. Because it is the largest, most extensive internet (with a small i) in the world, it is simply called the Internet (with a capital I).

1 Creation of the Internet

Main article: History of the Internet

The core networks forming the Internet started out in 1969 as the ARPANET, created by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). Some early research which contributed to the ARPANET included work on decentralised networks, queueing theory, and packet switching. On January 1January 1 is the first day of the calendar year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Here a calendar year refers to the order in which the months are displayed, January to December. The first day of the medieval Julian year was usually a day other, 1983Events January January 1 Beat Raaflaub became Basel Boys Choir's new conductor January 1 the ARPANET officially changes to use the Internet Protocol, creating the Internet. January 1 compulsory wearing of seat belts becomes law in the UK. January 2 The mu, the ARPANET changed its core networking protocols from NCPThe Network Control Program (sometimes the acronym NCP is mistakenly expanded to Network Control Protocol but this term is not found in the contemporary documentation) is the original protocol suite of the ARPANET. In NCP, the physical layer, the data lin to TCP/IP, marking the start of the Internet as we know it today.

Another important step in the development was the National Science Foundation'sThe National Science Foundation (NSF is an independent United States government agency responsible for supporting basic science research. It operates mainly through the establishment of research grants, particularly to universities or through individual g (NSF) building of a university backbone, the NSFNetNational Science Foundation Network NSFNet was a major part of early 1990s Internet backbone. Organisations connecting to the Internet in the early 1990s had to sign a usage agreement directly with NSFnet to gain access to large parts of the Public Intern, in 19861986 is a common year starting on Wednesday. January 9 After losing a pa. Important disparate networks that have successfully been accommodated within the Internet include Usenet and Bitnet.

During the 1990s, the Internet successfully accommodated the majority of previously existing computer networks (some networks such as Fidonet have remained separate). This growth is often attributed to the lack of central administration, which allows organic growth of the network, as well as the non-proprietary nature of the Internet protocols, which encourages vendor interoperability and prevents one company from exerting control over the network.
