James Gosling was born near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He graduated from the University of Calgary in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983.
He is generally credited as the inventor of the Java programming language, and has made major contributions to several other software systems such as NeWS and Gosling Emacs.
