KMFDM is a German electronic music band in the industrial music genre. KMFDM was founded in Paris in 1984 by Sascha Konietzko and Udo Sturm . KMFDM has toured and recorded with a number of additional musicians, including Bill Rieflin and Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy, Raymond Watts of P.I.G., and spoken word artist Nicole Blackman .
Their name stands for "Kein Mitleid für die Mehrheit," which means "no pity for the majority" in English.
When the band first toured the US, the members began using alternate English meanings for their name as a prank on journalists who could not understand German. Amongst these alternate meanings were: Kill Mother Fucking Depeche Mode, Keep Madonna From Doing Music, Kylie Minogue Fans Don't Masturbate. The band continued to feed the urban legend surrounding their name through the lyrics of the song "Sucks" on the album Angst: "We hate Depeche Mode. We don't care for Madonna or Kylie Minogue".
Their lyrics typically discuss the rejection of and resistance against incompetent rule in capitalist society. KMFDM also gained notoriety when they were noted as a favourite band of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, of Columbine mass-murder infamy.
Due to differences between founding member Sascha Konietzko and other band members, KMFDM split up in 19981998 was a common year starting on Thursday (see link for calendar), and was designated the International Year of the Ocean''. He left KMFDM in 1998, and formed Slick Idiot with another former KMFDM member, Gunter Schulz. KMFDM reformed in 20022002 is a common year starting on Tuesday (see link for calendar). 2002 was the first palindromic year since 1991 and the last until 2112. 2002 was also designated: International Year of Ecotourism and Mountains National Science Year in the United Kingdom with Konietzko as the sole original member, but with the return of Raymond Watts, an early member of the group and occasional contributor over the years.
