Kamenz (Lusatian: Kamjenc) is a Kreis ( district) in the north-east of Saxony, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Spree-Neiße, Niederschlesischer Oberlausitzkreis, Bautzen, Sächsische Schweiz, the district-free city Dresden, and the districts Meißen and Riesa-Großenhain. The district-free city Hoyerswerda is completely surrounded by the district.
1 History
In 1994 the previous district Hoyerswerda as well as part of the district Dresden were added to the district Kamenz. From 1994 to 1996 it was called Westlausitz - Dresdner Land, but then renamed back to the old name Kamenz.
2 Geography
The two major rivers in the district are the Spree and the Schwarze Elster (Black Elster).
