After Las Vegas and Reno, Laughlin is the third most visited casino and resort destination in Nevada. The town is named for founder Don Laughlin , a Minnesota native who owns the Riverside Resort and Casino.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 231.8 km² (89.5 mi²). 228.2 km² (88.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.55% water.
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 7,076 people, 3,177 households, and 1,995 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 31.0/km² (80.3/mi²).
