Born in Hamburg, he studied at Leipzig, Berlin and Göttingen, in 1838 he was appointed to the professorship of philology at the University of Tartu, which, however, he resigned in 1843. His chief works are: Demeter u. Persephone (1837); Griechische Mythologie (1854–1855; 4th ed., by C Robert, 1887 seq.); and Römische Mythologie (1858; 3rd ed. by H Jordan, 1881–1883). He also co-operated with Heinrich RitterHeinrich Ritter ( November 21, 1791 February 3, 1869) was a German philosopher. He was born at Zerbst, and studied philosophy and theology at Gottingen and Berlin until 1815. In 1824 he became extraordinary professor of philosophy at Berlin, later transfe in the preparation of the most useful Historia philosophiae graecae et romanae ex fontium locis contexta (1838; ed. E Wellmann, 1898).
He contributed extensively to Ersch and GrubersJohann Gottfried Gruber ( November 29, 1774 August 7, 1851), German critic and literary historian, was born at Naumburg on the Saale. He received his education at the town school of Naumburg and the university of Leipzig, after which he resided successive Allgemeine Encyklopädie and Pauly’s Realencyklopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft. See GT Stichling, Ludwig Preller. Eine Gedächtnissrede (Weimar, 1863); Conrad BursianConrad Bursian ( November 14, 1830 September 21, 1883), was a German philologist and archaeologist. He was born at Mutzschen in Saxony. When his parents moved to Leipzig, he received his early education at the Thomas school, and entered the university in, Geschichte der classischen Philologie in Deutschland (1883).
