MSF itself was the result of a merger in January of 1988. The main parts were Association of Scientific, Technical, and Managerial Staff and Technical, Administrative, and Supervisory Staffs , another British union.

The General Secretary of the MSF section of Amicus at the time of the merger was Roger Lyons, but his position was held under legal challenge, and Derek Simpson won the resulting election.
