Issued in 1537, what came to be known as Mathew's Bible is thought to be the work of John Rogers. Probably published in Antwerp, it was the first English bible to be officially licensed (by King Henry VIII). The work is based heavily on William Tyndale's translation, but with revisions and contributions thought to be those of another ardent follower of Tyndale's, Miles Coverdale. John Rogers was burned at the stake in 1555. After preaching an anti- Roman Catholic sermon warning against "pestilent Popery, idolatry, and superstition," he was imprisoned for a year, and in February 1555 he was executed for heresy by Queen Mary.
