Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre, ( May 6, 1758– July 28, 1794), known also to his contemporaries as "the Incorruptible", is one of the best known of the leaders of the French Revolution. He was the leader of the Committee of Public Safety which oversaw the period of the French Revolution in which the revolutionaries consolidated their power, a period which is commonly known as the Reign of Terror. Robespierre himself became a virtual dictator in his final years until he was finally executed by his conspiring comrades. Politically, although a disciple of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, he became perforce an extreme left-winger, and a capable articulator of these beliefs. He harnessed this talent as a means of rabble-rousing. He was a rather impractical man, and coupled mystical beliefs in The Supreme Being with marked fanaticism.
He was described as a physically unimposing man, although he dressed immaculately, so much so that some described him as being vain or a dandy.
