1 Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,549 km˛ (984 mi˛). 2,542 km˛ (982 mi˛) of it is land and 7 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.
2 Demographics
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 45,936 people, 18,024 households, and 12,094 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km˛ (47/mi˛). There are 21,644 housing units at an average density of 9/km˛ (22/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.46% White, 1.87% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,024 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93.
