Home > Mlada Boleslav


Town in central Bohemia, Czech Republic, 43,399 inhabitants (2002).

Founded after 940 by king Boleslav as royal castle. Later, town privilege was established and Mlada Boleslav became important place on road from Prague to northern Bohemia, Lusatia and Brandenburg. In 16th century town was leading centre of Brethren Church ( Unitas fratrum , Moravians) with Brethren bishop, renaissance cathedral and Brethren printing house. After recatholisation in 17th century, number of inhabitants decline. In 19th new prosperity came, town became important centre of its region and new schools, theatre, museum and especially Laurin a Klement (today Skoda) car factory was founded. After communist revolution in 1948, town declined horribly.
