Molds (or moulds) are various fungi that cover surfaces as fluffy mycelium and usually produce masses of asexual, sometimes sexual spores. The molds are not an actual taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping – they can be found in the divisions Zygomycota, Deuteromycota or Ascomycota.
The presence of mold usually implies decay, although some molds are used deliberately in, for example cheesemaking, and for the production of antibiotics.
The mold Neurospora crassaNeurospora crassa is a type of red bread mold of the phylum Ascomycota. The genus name, meaning "nerve spore" refers to the characteristic striations on the spores that resemble axons. Neurospora crassa is notable for its use as a model organism in scienc is commonly used as a model organismA model organism is one that is extensively studied to understand particular biological phenomena, with the expectation that discoveries made in the model organism will provide insight into the workings of other organisms. This works because evolution reu in scientific experiments.
