Home > Nagato Province


Nagato ( Ja. 長門国; -no kuni), often called Choshu (長州 Choshu), was an old province of Japan. It was a province at the extreme western end of Honshu, in the area that is today Yamaguchi prefecture. Nagato bordered on Iwami and Suo provinces.

In 1871 with the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures (Haihan Chiken) after the Meiji Restoration, the provinces of Nagato and Suo were combined to eventually establish Yamaguchi prefecture.

Historically, the oligarchy that came into power after the " Meiji Restoration" of 1868 had a strong representation from the Choshu province, as Ito Hirobumi, Yamagata AritomoYamagata Aritomo ( ; April 22, 1838 February 1, 1922) was a Japanese military leader and politician, and the third ( December 24, 1889 May 6, 1891) and 9th ( 1898 1900) Prime Minister of Japan. He was the first Prime Minister under the Meiji constitution, and Kido Koin were from there. Other natives famous for their role in the restoration include Yoshida ShoinYoshida Shoin ( Japanese language 1830- 1859) is a Japanese scholar and teacher. Born in Choshu domain, he, after being released from house arrest, opened a private school, Shoka Sonjyuku to teach the youth military arts and politics. He was executed in 1, Takasugi ShinsakuTakasugi Shinsaku ( Japanese language 1839- 1867) is a samurai who contributed to the Meiji restoration. Born in Choshu domain, he studied under Yoshida Shoin and organized Kiheitai. He died of tuberculosis at a young age. Shinsaku, Takasugi Shinsaku, Tak, Katsura Kogoro and Kusaka Genzui among others.
