The term properly applies to any sports team at the school, but without any other qualifier, it almost always refers to the football team, which currently competes in the Big Twelve Conference.
Husker football has been around since 1890 and has claimed 46 conference championships and national championships in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997, with the latter three marking the only time that a team has won three NCAA Division I-A national titles in four seasons. Famous former Huskers included Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rogers , Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch.
The most famous coach in Cornhusker history is Tom Osborne, who led the team from 1973 to 1997. The Huskers have two official mascots, Herbie HuskerHerbie Husker is the oldest current mascot of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's sports teams. Introduced in the early 1970s, Herbie has gone through a few makeovers, the most recent coming before the 2003 football season. He is dressed in denim coveral and Lil' RedLil' Red is the newest mascot of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's sports teams. Basically an inflatable suit of a red-clad toddler, Lil' Red can be seen dancing on the sidelines of a Nebraska football game at Memorial Stadium, or at the Bob Devaney sp.
