Nueces County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 313,645. Its county seat is Corpus Christi 6. Nueces County is named for the Nueces River, which flows through the county.


1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,021 km˛ (1,166 mi˛). 2,165 km˛ (836 mi˛) of it is land and 856 km˛ (331 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 28.34% water.

The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,959, and the median income for a family is $41,066. Males have a median income of $31,571 versus $22,324 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,036. 18.20% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.00% of those under the age of 18 and 15.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
