In control theory, the outputs of a system are what can be measured. Specifically, outputs are differentiated from statesIn control theory, states are what characterize a system. With linear systems states are not unique, but can be transformed into equivalent states using certain linear transformations. States are differentiated from the inputs and outputs of the system.
