Paul Coffey (born June 1 1961, in Weston, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey defenceman in the NHL.

Drafted sixth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 1980, Coffey played his first seven seasons during the heyday of the Oilers; they won three Stanley Cups in 1984, 1985 and 1987. Coffey was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1987, where he played four and a half seasons, and won another Stanley Cup in 1991. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings where he would play for half of two seasons, and was then traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he played for four and a half seasons, he was then traded to the Hartford WhalersThe Hartford Whalers previously known as the New England Whalers were a World Hockey Association and later National Hockey League franchise from 1972 to 1997. In 1997, the Whalers franchise was moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and its name changed to the where he would play one season. He was then traded to the Philadelphia FlyersThe Philadelphia Flyers are a National Hockey League team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was then traded to the Chicago Black Hawks, and played half a season. The trophy is named in honour of James Norris, owner of the D for best defenceman in 1985, 1986 and 1995.

One of the best defencemen of all time, renowned for his excellent skating ability and speed on the ice. In 2004, Paul Coffey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
