A talented striker, Walsh began his career at Charlton Athletic F.C.. He then transferred to Luton Town F.C., where his impressive displays meant many larger clubs began to track his progress. After winning the PFA Young Player of the year award in 1984 Liverpool F.C. swooped to take him to Anfield.
His career at Liverpool was succesful, depsite being prone to injury, with Walsh forming great partnerships with Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish. However, the arrival of other strikers meant increasing competition, and so Walsh was sold to Tottenham Hotspur F.C. for £500,000.
From Tottenham he transferred to Portsmouth F.C., where he was a huge success, helping them to the Division One play-offs. His goal scoring record meant that Premiership side Manchester City F.C. signed him. He formed a devestating partnership with German striker Uwe Rosler , which helped keep Man City safe from relegation. However, at the start of the 1995/96 season, Manchester City offered Walsh in a 'player + cash' deal for Portsmouth's Gerry Creaney , and so Walsh returned for a second spell at the South-coast club. It was there that he ended his career.
Walsh won three England caps.
