As an ANZAC camp temporarily occupied the site, it was originally named New Anzac-on-Sea, but a newspaper competition found a new name for the settlement. The Daily Express sued Charles Neville over the competition, holding that it was a scam, offering "free" plots of land in the town as runner-up prizes, but issuing them only on the payment of a conveyancing fee. Although the newspaper won the case, the publicity benefitted the town.
Peacehaven lies by the South Downs, and is a quiet seaside resort. It lies on the zero meridian.
