Peak Pobeda is the highest mountain in the Tian Shan, and the highest one in Kyrgyzstan. It is the most northerly 7,000-meter peak in the world.
Peak Pobeda is a massive dome, covered in snow and ice, located just ten miles south of the range's second highest peak, Khan Tengri (7010 m./ 22,998 ft.).
Although Pobeda is 1,500 feet higher than its neighbor to the north, Khan Tengri was believed to be the highest peak in the range until Pobeda's discovery in 1946. It was first climbed in 1956 by Vitali Abalakov 's party.
The first winter ascent of the peak was made by Anatoli Boukreev in February 1990.
