Pemiscot County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 20,047. Its county seat is Caruthersville 6.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,327 km˛ (512 mi˛). 1,277 km˛ (493 mi˛) of it is land and 50 km˛ (19 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.77% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 20,047 people, 7,855 households, and 5,317 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km˛ (41/mi˛). There are 8,793 housing units at an average density of 7/km˛ (18/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 71.76% White, 26.23% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,855 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.00% are married couples living together, 18.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.00% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,911, and the median income for a family is $27,553. Males have a median income of $27,476 versus $17,358 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,968. 30.40% of the population and 24.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.20% of those under the age of 18 and 23.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
