Penalty shot in ice hockey is a penalty against an opposing team which took away a scoring chance of a player. A free shot is given to a player on the offended team who was on the ice rink during the play violation. In the NHL, a penalty shot is awarded to the player who was hauled down in a clear-cut breakaway in the offensive zone and did not get a shot on goal. The shot is unimpeded as the player taking the shot will stand at centre ice and skate towards the opposing goalie and take one shot to attempt a goal score. The penalty shot is the most rare and exciting play in hockey. Ice hockey
