The Pentland Firth, which is actually more like a strait than a firth, separates the Orkney Islands from the northern tip of the Scottish Highland region around Caithness.

On the southern (Caithness) shore is the town of Thurso, the port of Scrabster, the famous John o' Groats, Mey (site of the Castle of Mey), along with many smaller villages. The headland of Dunnet Head, which protrudes into the Pentland Firth, is the most northerly point on mainland Scotland.

In the middle of the Pentland Firth are two significant islands, Stroma and Swona, with the small Pentland Skerries group in the east. The islands of HoyHoy (from Old Norse h y meaning high island) is one of the Orkney Islands. The dramatic coastline of Hoy is what usually greets visitors to the Orkney Islands. It has extremes of many kinds: some of the highest cliffs in Britain at St John's Head; the imp and South RonaldsaySouth Ronaldsay is one of the Orkney Islands in Scotland. It is linked to the Orkney Mainland by the Churchill Barriers, running via Burray, Glimps Holm and Lamb Holm. South Ronaldsay's main village is St Margaret's Hope, named after Margaret of Norway wh border the firth to the north and are part of the Orkney Islands.

One ferry runs from Scrabster in Caithness to StromnessStromness is the second-largest town in the Orkney Islands and is located on the southwestern edge of the mainland of Orkney. A long-established seaport, it has a population of about two thousand. The town consists of a single main street flanked with hou on the Orkney Mainland, running along the western fringes of the Pentland Firth, while another runs from Gills Bay near John o' Groats to South RonaldsaySouth Ronaldsay is one of the Orkney Islands in Scotland.
